The value of Human Life

Do we ever consider what is the value we carry in the society at large? There is no doubt we carry some value either positive or negative but what are the factors responsible to decide that value. Whether the value that we carry is absolute or relative?

These are the some of the questions that disturbing me since yesterday evening. We were out for a launch with one of my brother’s old friend while chatting over the launch; my brother told us about two news items that got some space in some local media.

The first one about an urchin who was thrown out of train by a ticket collector and in the process the poor kid lost one hand and one leg but spared with life. After listening that news for a moment I could not think how I should react that news, probably it would have been better if in that frightful incident the kid should have got killed. Whatever, our government has announced an ex-gratia of Rs. 1.0 lacs for the kid to take care of his future. Now he lives to face this cruel world where leave alone divinity we do not even deserved to be called as humans. In a similar incident a couple got killed because they could not pay ten rupees towards charges of a bus ticket. These are only few of such incidents which somehow come to the public domain who knows how many such incidents go unnoticed everyday in all the corners of world.

While just trying to visualize about the pain that little kid might have endured, I was thinking what value I carry on my head if today I met with eventuality. Leave alone eventuality if today I need a medical attention which will cost me in lacs, either my employer or my relatives will arrange for that. But why? Who and what determines our value in a collective system of society? How many people are lucky enough to have that privilege who carry a value and are indispensable.

I think value of an individual is being decided upon the past contributions rather than on future potential. I am not questioning such valuation model but should not the future potential of individuals be given due importance in our present valuation models. Should not government take care of our kids who may decide the future course of this country? But just like any other third world country the prime concern of our government is to take care of those who are already pampered. No vision for future ,just try to justify the present.

Education and health should have been two prime factors of government to make this country robust in terms of Human Capital, but instead our government focused on industries and employment generation and that to for few privileged ones. So, look today the country houses world’s more millionaires and that number is increasing but also has 30 million child labours, about 10% of population is absolute poor, an education system only riches can afford, medical facility with few or no doctors and private medicals thriving and doing brisk business. The dream socialistic country of Nehru and Gandhi family.

Definitely India is shining but burning the other India to ashes. When we will realize this before it got delayed beyond correction. Hope and only hope I am looking for …….
